Obituary

Obituary for Geraldine Margaret Curtin

Geraldine (Gerri) Margaret Marecek Curtin born in Yonkers, NY August 19, 1942 to Marie and Edward Marecek. Gerri passed to eternal life with Christ in Gales Ferry, CT on December 9, 2019. She married Kenneth Curtin Sr. also of Yonkers NY in 1963. Gerri is survived by her three children and their spouses: Alice Hornbeck (son-in-law Todd), Louisburg, NC; CAPT Kenneth Curtin Jr, (daughter-in-law Donna), Gales Ferry, CT; and Kathleen Fairchild (son-in-law JC) of Louisburg, NC, 9 grandchildren (Patti, Corinne, Todd, Kenny, Stephen, Sean, Cassie, JC, and Caitlyn), 2 great grandchildren (Luke and Archer), numerous nieces and nephews, and her sister, Betsy Bonney of Oxford Junction, IA.

She moved to Louisburg, NC after retiring from Nursing. She was a member of Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church of Louisburg, NC and a mainstay of the Louisburg NC Senior Center.
Gerri always gave selflessly, was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and friend. Gerri is also known as the “flag lady” or “modern day Betsy Ross”. After September 11, 2001 with the encouragement of her son-in-law JC, she started to crochet American Flags irregardless of the fact that she was legally blind. She was featured on the local news in Raleigh, NC, and CNN for her patriotic crocheting of over 900 handmade flags across the country. Only collecting money to cover costs of materials and utilizing the rest for donations, Gerri personally presented a check to the NY Police and Fire Fund. One of Gerri’s handmade flags have been presented to the White House and one still remains at the Ground Zero Museum.
Gerri will have a funeral at Our Lady of the Rosary Roman Catholic Church in Louisburg, NC on January 4th, 2020 at 11:00am
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the North Carolina Library for the Blind at https://statelibrary.ncdcr.gov/lbph/outreach/donations or Project Purple Pancreatic Cancer Reserach fund at https://projectpurple.org.
