Obituary

Obituary for Margaret Wiggins Strickland

Margaret Wiggins Strickland died on July 13, 2020. She was fortunate to have her son, Robert, care for her for the last few months so she did not have to leave the home she loved. Margaret was born to Robert and Eva Wiggins on December 15, 1923 and lived her entire life in Franklin County. During her long life, she experienced the Great Depression, World War II and many other defining historic events. She also had the unique experience of being confronted in her yard by an elephant after the animal escaped from a circus in Louisburg.

Margaret was an independent woman who continued to drive until the last few years of her life. When younger, she was generous in using her time to drive family members and friends to appointments. She also worked at the polls on election days for a number of years. Margaret was a collector of clothes, antiques and vintage items. She loved shopping at Hudson Belk in downtown Raleigh and then swinging by Krispy Kreme to see if the hot doughnut sign was on. She loved music and delighted in attending Louisburg Baptist Church to hear her favorite organist, Brian Miller. Margaret was a good cook in her earlier years, preparing favorites such as fried chicken, butterbeans and peas from the garden, and a wonderful dessert called boiled custard.

Surviving Margaret are her son, Robert Strickland and wife, Karen; her daughter, Anne Clifton and husband, Van; two grandchildren, Philip Clifton and partner, Josie Richard; Jeremy Clifton and wife, Margie; and three great grandchildren, Autumn, Christopher, and James Clifton.

No visitation or service is planned. Margaret will be laid to rest in the family plot at the Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery.
